Before buying a painting from an artist, it’s worth asking a few important questions to understand not only the value of the work, but also to establish a deeper connection with the piece. Here’s a list of what’s worth knowing:
The history of the painting
- What inspired the artist to create the work?
- Does the painting have a story, idea, symbolism?
technique and materials
- What technique was used?
- What materials were used (canvas, paper, oil, acrylic, etc.)?
- How durable are these materials over time?
Authenticity and authorship
- Can a certificate of authenticity be obtained?
- Is the work signed?
framing and exhibition readiness
- Is the painting framed (framed, hung, etc.)?
- Does it require special care or storage conditions?
Limited edition (if it is not an original)
- Is it a unique work or a copy/reproduction?
- If limited edition – what number and how many copies in total?
Image rights
- Does the artist retain copyright to the image?
- Can the image be used for personal or commercial purposes (e.g., published on social networks, website)?
Cost and terms of purchase
- Is shipping or handling included in the price?
- Are returns or exchanges possible?
